According to Freud, our dreams are highly informative and a portal to our subconscious. The subconscious attempts to reveal ideas during dreams, but it is the person who is responsible for deciding what any of it means. With my art, I take the role of the subconscious, and the viewer can interpret the content however they see fit. Like the subconscious, I have my ideas and themes, but everything is not cut and dry.
Throughout humanity, the most intriguing question has been, “What happens after we die?” The artwork in this show begins with a person who is possibly about to embark on death. I intend for the viewer to experience a first hand viewpoint through this journey. This situation could be considered a near death experience. People have various theories on what happens during a near death experience. Some use scientific explanations involving a lucid dream type state of mind. Others explain it as a spiritual, out of body experience.
I primarily work with the computer and motion graphics. I use traditional media and techniques in conjunction with the computer to create unique art. For this piece, nearly everything was drawn with either graphite, pen, or with the tablet on the computer. I intended to create a sketchy aesthetic through most of the movie. In a time, where a large amount of computer generated animation is vector or three dimensional, I enjoy creating something rough and sporadic. The aesthetic I used lends itself to the narrative I am telling. I use the rough, gestural style to signify a certain part of the narrative, and I use vector style sparingly at distinct times. While I enjoy the tools the computer gives me, I do not want to forget traditional media and techniques.
